In the stational Mass for the First Sunday of Advent in Rome the Church selected is the Basilica of St. Mary Major at the Crib. Here is where the precious relic of Christ’s manger is kept. It is as if Mary the Mother of Christ is greeting us as she prepares the Crib to lay her Divine Son Jesus.

The Introit Psalm 24 may be applied to the lips of Mary as the prayer of her expectation: “To You I lift up my soul, O my God. In You I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in You be put to shame” (Psalm 24(25): 1-3). We shall return again to this stational Church of the Crib on Christmas Eve when we celebrate our Savior’s Birth. Let us make good use of these days of Advent which are given to us in order to prepare our hearts anew for the coming of the Lord.
